In 2012 for the first time the AIBs is including an award for the best short documentary, feature or report. Members of the Association for International Broadcasting and those taking part in the 2011 AIBs requested this new category and the AIB is happy to respond to their requests, having noticed the increasing number of top-quality short documentaries covering a wide range of subjects. This award will highlight and reward the best of these.
This increase in high quality short features reflects both the fact that not every news story calls for a thirty minute production and the increasing production of compelling videos by online news services and newspapers, providing competition to established TV companies.
Broadcasters now include new companies making online, and even mobile, videos for a large audience and this award is open to traditional broadcasters, newspapers and online video portals. The short listed entries and eventual winner will be those who have best been able to tackle an issue in under 10 minutes, telling a story in a succinct way that grabs the audiences attention.
